Had an amazing time meeting Stockshop execs, Maggie and Melanie and Jenn of 5byseven this past month here in San Diego. Maggie was visiting their LA offices from Boston and we were able to meet for a delicious lunch. We even managed to conduct an interview for Stockshop’s upcoming website relaunch (Hoping my Toastmasters experience didn’t make me look and sound too dorky). Thank you so much for your support and am looking forward to a long, continued and successful relationship.

A lot of people have been asking about how I’ve taken some my long exposure photos. The basic idea is to keep the shutter open long enough so that any movement becomes a blur. Typically, you will need a tripod and preferably a shutter release to avoid any camera shake. Exposures can last from fractions of a second to minutes. I set my camera to shutter priority and start snapping. This technique requires some trial and error but once you get used to the idea, it’s fun and can be very rewarding. All the shots below were taken in the evening. You can take longer exposures during the daytime but require filters which we’ll cover for a future blog. In the meantime, here’s some examples:

Taken at a DC metro. I was surprised the man never turned around to look at me because I took about 5 photos as the subway passed. I didn’t have a tripod at a time but just stayed very still against a wall and took it. 1/4 second exposure, F/5.

Taken in DC. I actually used a tripod here and used a shutter release chord. 5 second exposure, F/22. The trick here was to take it quick because security was very suspicious of what I was doing. However, I got the shot I wanted before getting kicked out : )

New York City thoroughfare. Taken while shoppers were waiting for a bus or taxi. Hand-held, approximately 1/4 second leaning against a lamp post, F/5.

I actually brought a tripod when I went to Tokyo a few years ago. Here’s a scene of a typical Tokyo street taken a bridge above. 5 second exposure, F/22.

Japanese subway. No tripod but set my camera on a concrete ledge. 3 second exposure, F/22.

Mission Valley carnival. Taken across the street next to Gordon Biersch. Used a tripod for this one. 4 second exposure, F/22.

Arc De Triomphe, Paris France. This was crazy now that I think about it. I brought a tripod and posted on a slim island right in the middle of the Champs-Elysees. Traffic was racing on either side of me but I wanted this shot! 8 second exposure, F/22.

You can get some really interesting and cool effects with this technique. Go out and try it out and share your pictures back with us, we’d love to see and showcase them for a future blog. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. -Brian
